Gutter Protection System – Worth the Investment?
Autumn is here and so is gutter cleaning season. While we may enjoy seeing the horizon aflame with the brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows of the turning leaves, we don’t look forward to the chores the season brings. With each passing day, more and more leaves fall with the added delight of acorns, twigs, and other such debris. The majority of people detest clambering up the ladder rungs, knees shaking, to scrape out the foul smelling, rotting leaves, and debris. If you’re one of those that would much rather spend your fall weekends watching football, or doing pretty much anything else, you’ll want to look into a gutter protection system.
A gutter protection system – referred to commonly as gutter guards – are strips of mesh, vinyl, wire, or aluminum that attach across the tops of your gutters to protect them from debris. They have many benefits, some of which may not be so obvious.
Having gutter guards in place means fewer clogs in the gutters all around your house, including in the downspouts. During Autumn, all the falling leaves and debris slide down your roof and can be caught in your gutters.
As the leaves decay, they create a layer of sludge and grime that can stop water from effectively draining off of your house. Blockages can cause water runoff in places where it wasn’t intended, or even water pooling on your roof. Both of these scenarios can cause roof leaks, mold or mildew growth, or even flooding in the basement.
Areas of standing water also create the perfect breeding ground for mosquitos, house centipedes, cockroaches, and other unsavory insects. Having gutter guards in place can easily prevent all of this.
Ideally, you should clean your gutters out twice a year – once in the spring and again in the fall. For many, this is a tough task. Some people are nervous about heights, while others can’t physically reach some spots of their roof with the average ladder.
Installing a gutter protection system means leaves and debris that slide down your roof will land on the guard. Rather than getting embedded in the gutter, the wind will blow them off and down to the ground. This means that gutter cleanings go from a twice-a-year affair to a chore that needs attending only once every couple of years or so. Acrophobes rejoice!
A collection of wet debris sitting inside a metal gutter is a recipe for rust. Without the debris, water can drain out of your gutters easily, which means they will remain rust-free much longer than their uncovered counterparts. This increases their longevity, which means you likely won’t have to worry about gutter replacement or repair as often.
Debris in the gutter collects moisture from rainfall. Come winter, when the temperature drops, the moisture and debris freeze, making an even larger blockage. This creates the same water seeping threats to your roof and basement mentioned earlier, but in the winter it can also lead to larger amounts of heavy snow sitting on your roof for longer periods of time, or dangerous icicle formations that could hurt unsuspecting passersby below.
